Model Name:
(HO) RGS Lizard Head bunkhouse
Description:
Lizard Head Pass above Trout Lake in SW Colorado was where the Rio Grande Southern crossed from the San Miguel river basin to the Dolores river, at a bit over 10000 feet. Here there was a small station, facilities for stock loading and a very basic bunk house for the section crew who looked after the railway.
The HO scale model is scratchbuilt in styrene using Evergreen sheet stock, and Wills stone for the foundation. The door and double-pane windows are all scratchbuilt too. The porch floor is wood. The roof is correctly planked on the underside with a tissue covering to represent tar paper. The chimney was hand-laid from individual Juweela HO bricks to the RGS style. There are lights inside that represent an oil lamp on a table and a small fire in the grate.
Model Name:
(7mm) Padfracombe Goods Shed
Description:
The goods shed has been built for my ‘O’ gauge layout and is based on the shed at Ilfracombe. It is somewhat shorter but is still over 700mm long. All sides and roof are cut on the club’s laser cutter from thin MDF using a stone wall pattern manipulated on the computer to get the right size and shape of stones. The quoins were cut separately and glued in place. Filler masked the gaps. It was painted a stone colour using emulsion and then dry brushed with greys and rust coloured enamels. The roof is removable, with finely cut trusses, glued to an MDF flat surface and covered in paper cut into rows of slates. Guttering is from an umbrella found at a tip!! The windows are cut from white Rowmark plastic, two pieces being used to sandwich a layer of clear acrylic. There is an interior platform and a white metal crane.
